There's only the Viking scenario and Poland DLC available so patches and content is pretty low at the moment. However I do have a relatively new device and keep it off when not in use, I'm also a stickler for making sure absolutely nothing else is running on the iPad when I start the game up.

I play between 60 and 90 minutes max and battery if full is usually down to around 70-75% remaining. I have kids so I also don't get to play marathon sessions. I play standard length games usually so I can't speak for epic length games. The game seems to run well regardless of the amount of units and cities on screen. Typically it's really only turn times that slow down. I stick to around 9 other civs and maybe a max of 10-12 city states. Even on larger maps late game provided you don't go crazy with how many civilizations you're playing with. It runs really, really well as it stands.

Okay so from what I've heard through various reviews is that the game can get slow if you don't have their recommended devices or if you mod the game to include retina graphics.
